Singulair Chewables (Montelukast) is in a group of oral medications called leukotriene receptors. Leukotrienes are a substance produced by the body that respond to triggers and cause airways to swell and narrow. Singulair Chewables works by blocking the effects of the leukotrienes, which helps prevent and manage asthma symptoms. Those with asthma should always have their fast-acting asthma medication on hand, in case of an asthma attack. Singulair Chewables is not to be used for an asthma attack once it has started.

Asthma is an inflammation of the lungs, where the bronchi are reversibly narrowed. The smooth muscle cells in the bronchi constrict during an asthma attack, the airways then become inflamed and swollen. Breathing becomes difficult; it is advised to avoid triggering factors and make use of drug treatments that can prevent attacks. Drugs are to be used for acute attacks, which are commonly inhaled. Singulair Chewables is most commonly used in more serious cases for long-term prevention.
