Nexium Equivalents
Active Ingredient: Esomeprazole
Nexium (Esomeprazole) is known as a proton pump inhibitor, which is used in treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and stomach ulcers. Nexium works by decreasing the level of acid that the stomach produces. Nexium relieves the pain of heartburn and symptoms caused by the reversed flow of stomach acid. Nexium may also be prescribed to prevent gastric ulcers, which are caused by bacterial infection.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition where the stomach acids reverse and make their way up to the esophagus, the section that links your mouth to your stomach, this can often cause pain and discomfort.
The stomach contains a lining to protect it from it’s own acids; the esophagus does not have any lining so when reflux occurs the result is heartburn. The problem with this disease isn’t just the heartburn pain and discomfort. Over time, recurrent acid reflux can potentially damage the delicate lining of the esophagus. About 1 in 3 acid reflux sufferers may have this condition, called erosive esophagitis. Only a doctor can tell if this damage has occurred.
